C'mon, Nikon users!

We can't let Canon users have all the action.

I shoot with a D300. It lends itself very nicely to shooting HDR. The bottom right button on the front is programmable and comes set from the factory for setting the bracketing mode. You can also program a mode for what this button does when it is held down during shooting, and I set mine for Bracketing Burst (Custom Settings f4, FUNC. button press->Bracketing Burst). I usually set my bracketing mode to 5 shots @ 1 eV spacing, and when I hold down this button while shooting, it fires off 5 bracketed shots at 5 frames/second and then stops. Shooting this fast makes it possible to get good results hand held with minimal ghosting.

Nikon Nikon Nikon rules... how about 9 frames of bracket...

Put the grip on and get all 9 frames in one second.. Now that's fast..

And I think buildings can be great too



And it's perfect for interior shots with no lighting


So weather you are Nikon or Canon, get out and shoot some HDR

HOLY smokes! 9 frames??? that is insane! What camera did you say you had again?

I just got the d80 and am starting to play with bracketing. New to all of this but I can tell you I am a purist at heart! I am a storm chaser and want to master getting wonderful storm shots down pat!
Any advice? with the D80 that is!

It is nice having the ability to do 9 frames, but for most instances, it is not necessary, especially if you are shooting RAW. For most instances, 3 shots, 2 eV apart will capture most if not all the dynamic range, although I prefer 5 shots, 1 eV apart. Unless you are shooting into the sun and have some deep shadows, that should be enough.

Your shots are spectacular, by the way. I'm surprised that you didn't capture more detail outside the window in the last shot if you are doing 9 shots.

I normally shoot 5 frames for my HDRs, and I always shoot JPEG as I have never seen any reason to shoot them in RAW (though i normally shoot in RAW for all important photo shoots)

My D300 can bracket 9 frames but one thing I like about my D80 is the ability to set the bracketed shots 2 stops apart (D300 can only do 1 stop apart)

But hands dawn the D300 is best when I set it for 5 frames and on continuous high and whip the 5 frames off in one second...

With my grip and an added battery I could do 9 frames per second (I think it's 9) but that would be too crazy...

I have been lusting after a D300 but your comment about its ability to bracket only 1 stop has me puzzled. I have the D70 and I can auto bracket up to 2 stops apart for 3 shots. Isn't the D300 supposed to be better than my camera? This doesn't make sense to me!

D2x, 24-120 VR with a mono-pod. A 7 shot, 1 stop, series, although I've since settled on 5 shots.

The exposure increment can be adjusted to 1/3, 1/2, & 1 eV.

RAW gets you a greater dynamic range than jpg, and isn't increased dynamic range what you are after with HDR?

Not sure why they limited the D300 to 1 EV. Maybe a future firmware update will fix this. You really only need 2 EV spacing if you are only shooting 3 shots. 1 EV with 5 or more shots will get you the complete dynamic range in most situations.

It's 8 frames max with the grip and the right battery, but what's 11 ms between friends?

Interestingly, the D200 also does 9 frames of auto-bracket. Unfortunately, it's also limited to 1 EV step max. I'll have to try it with all 9, and also tossing out every other frame to get +/- 2 and 4 EV. With up to +/- 5 EV of exposure compensation, things could get completely out of hand...

Let me ask you a q since I am a noob on my D80. So when bracketing on the d80, do you actually have to make 3 different pictures (shutter presses) or will it automatically take 3 different pictures with the one shutter release?

You have to press the shutter for each exposure. An exception, andI'm not sure about the D80, but some cameras have a burst mode that allows you to shoot a selected number of images by holding down the shutter release button until the sequence is completed.

The D80 has a burst mode that will take up to 3 frames/second when you keep the shutter button pressed. It will keep shooting until the memory buffer is full, which depends on your size and quality settings. Look in your manual under "Choosing a Shooting Mode".

With the D300, if you are in Exposure Bracketing mode, it will stop shooting in burst mode when you reach the amount of shots your bracketing is set to. I'm not sure if the D80 works that way, you will have to experiment.

Thanks guys. I will take a look at the manual. I don't recall the burst mode, but do recall reading about the memory buffer, so I am sure it is there!

Nikon noob here. I'm well versed in the Canon DSLR world having owned many/most of the recent Pro/Prosumer offerings....but figured I'd give Nikon a go and picked up a D90 today along with an 18-105VR and 70-300VR...will probably also get a 50 1.8 for low light indoors shots and of course a flash to round out the lineup. Let the experiment begin!

Ok, so help me out here. On my D80. I set it to bracketing. 3 frames at a 2ev apart. Set it to burst mode where it is supposed to take 3 pictures with one shutter release.
Problem is I get only 1 picture from it.
What is going on wrong here?
Any advice?

Burst Mode requires you to hold down the shutter release until all of the images are completed.

Hugh is correct, you must hold down the shutter button until all 3 frames are taken (speaking for my D90). This is also the case with the self timer, it will NOT take all 3 frames with one shutter press even in timer mode. That is the one thing I sorta dislike compared with my previous Canons....with those, you could set the camera to timer mode and just one press of the shutter release would take all 3 frames.

wierd. I notice while bracketing if you are bracketing the white balance, you just press the shutter once and it takes three pictures.
I wonder why it would in do it for wb and not exposure.

My thoughts exactly. Guess I gotta buy the shutter remote...
